Who needs to take the dMAT?
dMAT eligibility isn't a single fixed rule — it depends on the programme level you're applying for, your previous degree field, and what your target university actually requires. This page summarises the general criteria; use the route checker below for a personalised read on your situation.
Answer six quick questions about your programme and degree field to get a straight answer, rather than reading through general criteria.
General eligibility criteria
You are pursuing or have completed a Bachelor's degree in India and intend to apply for a Master's programme at a German higher education institution.
dMAT is aimed at applicants whose prior qualification was obtained in India — it is administered specifically through APS India for this reason.
Your target German university or programme requires (or accepts) a dMAT score as part of the APS certification or admissions process. Not every programme does — confirm this first.
dMAT is typically taken alongside or before your APS certificate application. You do not need to have completed APS first, but check the current sequencing required by APS India.
When dMAT is typically not required
- Applicants applying to Bachelor's programmes (a separate APS process applies)
- Applicants whose previous degree field falls outside the fields currently linked to the dMAT requirement
- Applicants on an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme
- Applicants whose target university does not request a dMAT score at all
Degree field matters more than you'd expect
Unlike a language test, dMAT eligibility is tied closely to the official title of your previous degree — not the informal name your college used for the programme. Fields broadly grouped under Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, and Business/Management are the ones currently linked to the requirement.
See the full, searchable list of affected previous-degree fields — including interdisciplinary and mixed-field cases — to check exactly where your degree falls.
Age and attempt limits
dMAT does not currently impose a minimum or maximum age limit, and there is no official cap on the number of times you may attempt it — though most candidates aim to clear it in one or two sittings given registration costs and scheduling. Confirm current attempt policies directly with APS India, as administrative rules can change between exam cycles.
