What is the dMAT exam?
The dMAT (Deutsch als Fremdsprache Aptitude Test) is an aptitude test developed and administered by g.a.s.t. (Gesellschaft für akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung) in partnership with DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst). It is specifically for international students — primarily those from India and China — who are applying to undergraduate programmes at German universities.
Who runs the dMAT?
dMAT is administered by g.a.s.t. — the same organisation that runs TestDaF and other German academic assessments. In India, it is conducted through APS India centres. The official website is d-mat.de.
How is it used by universities?
Your dMAT result is a percentile score from 0 to 200 with a mean of 100. German universities use this in different ways:
- Some universities require a minimum dMAT score for admission consideration
- Others use it as one factor in a holistic admissions score alongside academic grades and APS certificate status
- Some use it to exempt high scorers from additional admission tests
Check the specific admissions requirements of each programme you are applying to — requirements vary significantly.
How does it differ from other tests?
| Test | What it measures | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| dMAT | Cognitive aptitude (reasoning) | Indian/Chinese students for undergrad in Germany |
| TestDaF | German language proficiency | Non-native speakers of German |
| DSH | German language proficiency | Non-native speakers of German |
